Dept. IV
Course Format:
Design - Theory

Contemporary and traditional masonry structures. Characteristic masonry constructions. Materials and ways of construction of vertical and horizontal bearing elements. Actions and understanding of load paths. Mechanical characteristics of main masonry types. Mechanical behaviour of masonry structural elements under various loadings and estimation of their resistances. Basic principles for the design of new masonry structures, especially under seismic actions. Constructional requirements. Detailing of structural elements and connections.
Documentation, assessment and redesign of old masonry structures, due to damage or change of use. Survey, investigation (non-destructive / minor destructive techniques) and documentation of the state of preservation. Characteristic pathology with emphasis on seismic damage. Qualitative assessment of structural behaviour and diagnosis of the causes of damage. Comparative presentation of main repair and strengthening Intervention techniques, focusing mainly on those improving the seismic behaviour. Criteria for the selection of optimum intervention scheme. Interventions application technology. Emphasis to the wooden bearing elements and their role to the aseismic behaviour of masonry structures. Presentation of case studies. Site visits to historical masonry constructions, such as Daphni Monastery and Hagia Eirini at Aiolou street in Athens.
