The course objective is to thoroughly examine and understand the structure, the use of materials and the traditional construction practices of vernacular buildings, in order to accurately and successfully respond to the difficult task of their restoration, repair and maintenance. On site measurements and study of the architectural, structural and construction elements of a specific building within a traditional settlement. As the main work is on site, the students have the opportunity to become familiar with the natural and the built environment of the area, as well as the climate and the available local materials, all of which consist very important constraints for the determination of the form of the structures.
The pathology of the building is examined and the possible causes are discussed for the determination of the appropriate procedure of repair and restoration.
Full documentation analysis of damages and their causes. Suggestions for re-use and restoration of buildings focusing on repair and reinforcement.
