Presentation of the practical importance of understanding the knowledge of structural analysis and design in enhancing the architectural conception and creation. Teaching of the basic concepts, knowledge and tools of structural analysis and design, comprising five parts.

1. At the scale of the entire structure: presentation of the basic structural elements, various types of supports, structures and loads, the concepts of statically determinate and indeterminate structures, the equilibrium equations and the methodology for determining reactions and connection forces.

2. At the scale of cross-section: analysis of statically determinate plane structures and trusses, methodology for determining of internal forces and moments and drawing of corresponding diagrams.

3. At the scale of the material:  Mechanical properties of materials and mechanical behaviour of structural members for various types of loadings. Normal stress and deformation. Shear stress and deformation. Normal stresses due to bending. Importance of the moment of inertia of the section.

4. Correlation of internal forces and moments with deformations.

5. Introduction to structural design concepts and processes. Dimensioning criteria for ultimate limit states (strength, buckling) and serviceability limit states (bending deflection).
