Course Format:
Theory - Exercise

Basic structural design requirements. Types of actions. Classification of structural systems regarding their mechanical behaviour. Comparative presentation of the basic categories of linear structural systems (post and beam, frames, arches, cables), considering their capacity for bridging spans and bearing vertical and horizontal loads. Approximate analysis and pre-dimensioning of determinate and indeterminate linear structures. Alternative technical solutions for spanning elements [beams, girders, trusses of one or multiple spans), columns (vertical, V, tree), shear walls and bracings, ensuring global stability and lateral force bearing. Criteria for the selection of the optimal structural type and material, considering the architectural requirements.

Mechanical behaviour of structural members subjected to different types of loading, with particular focus on flexure, with or without the presence of axial force. Correlation of stiffness of structural elements for axial and flexural loading with the selection of the shape of the cross-section. Basic principles of the in-plane distribution of vertical structural elements, aiming at structural simplicity and uniformity in the distribution of mass and stiffness, in order to guarantee a reliable seismic behavior. Concepts of center of mass and center of rigidity.
