Design - Theory

The subject's dual title aims to capture two trends, which can be related: a) Design of the virtual building follows the path: digital building drawing (via geometric cad) --> 3D model, rendered --> export/transformation of 3D model data in VR format --> navigation/immersion into the virtual bulding. SW to be used includes AutoCAD, 3DS, Rhino, Maya, with data suitably converted for visualization in the VR environment available in the School of Architecture. b) Building Information Modelling -ΒΙΜ is the integrated design of the building, 'from cradle to grave', as the americans say, that is from early stages, until demolition and recycling. Design is no more geometric; it employes architectural engineering construction elements (AEC), which carry a large number of properties, including scheduling, acoustic and thermal, recycling, etc. SW to be used includes mainly Revit and ArchiCAD, and partly AutoCAD Architecture. Through this process, the 'drawing' takes on new ontological semantics and roles, not limited to visualization or construction; it can be used, for instance, in building operation. International standards such as IFC, Uniformat, ISO 10303, etc. are reviewed in the course.
